effort to have fluoride added
to Fort Worth's water supply to
help prevent tooth decay.
Edward Henry Carriker was born
June 7, 1925, to Lofton and Elva
Baker Carriker in the piney woods
of Center. In 1943 at the age
of 17 he volunteered for the Marines
to fight in World War II and entered
the Navy's V-12 college program,
graduating as a second lieutenant
in July 1945.
His unit was preparing for a costly
and bloody invasion of Japan when
the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima
and Nagasaki ended the war.
After losing a tooth in a boxing
match, Ed decided to become a
dentist and received his D.D.S.
from the University of Texas School
of Dentistry in 1950 and joined
the Army Dental Corps.
He served during the Korean War
as a first lieutenant and then
captain, assistant medical surgeon
in the first MASH unit assigned
to General Douglas MacArthur's
vaunted X Corps.
He participated in the invasion
of Inchon, the subsequent invasion
of Wonsan, the march to the Yalu
River and the Battle of the Chosin
Reservoir, which saw some of the
most devastating combat of the
war.
After completing his military
service, Dr. Carriker moved to
Fort Worth in 1953 to establish
a successful dental practice.
He was active in local, state
and national dental associations,
serving on the board of the Fort
Worth District Dental Society
for seven years, including a term
as president of the society. He
was a Fort Worth delegate several
times to the Texas and American
Dental Association and was chairman
of the state meeting in 1975.
He was made a fellow in the American
College of Dentists in 1968, a
fellow in the International College
of Dentists in 1969, and a fellow
in the Academy of General Dentistry
in 1970.
Dr. Carriker was active in community
service for a quarter century
in the Fort Worth area, including
donating dental services to the
Lena Pope Home and the Indigent
Dental Clinic.
He was a past president of the
Northwest Fort Worth Kiwanis Club,
former member of Key Clubs International,
a former director of Security
State Bank, former member of Ridglea
Country Club and former deacon
of Ridglea Presbyterian Church.
In 1974 he left private practice
to become vice president of dental
programs for BlueCross BlueShield
of Texas in Dallas.
For the next 15 years Dr. Carriker
developed and managed the company's
dental health insurance program
for the state of Texas.
Upon his retirement he and his
wife, Darlene, relocated to Arlington,
where he remained until his death.
Although retired he continued
to be a highly-respected member
of his profession. He received
the 50-Year Award from the Texas
Dental Association in 2001 and
the Fort Worth Dental Society's
Veteran's Honor Award in 2003.
Ed excelled at sports in high
school and college, where he ran
track and was a lifelong sports
enthusiast.
For many years after his retirement,
he participated as a swimmer in
the Senior Olympics, winning scores
of medals. He continued to swim
almost every day until his most
recent illness.
