Clay was born June 15, 1946 in
Gilmer, Texas, to the late Daurice
(Adams) and Henry Clay Harris,
III, was born again June 15, 1972,
and died Thursday, December 27,
2007 in Zapata County, Texas.
Clay had resided in Hudson for
the past 37 years. He was a school
teacher for 24 years and retired
from Centerville ISD in Trinity
County. Clay was also employed
as a principal at Lufkin schools
and as senior vice-president for
A. L. Williams. He had pastored
Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for
the past 16 years.
Clay had a love of nature, the
outdoors, old western movies and
memorabilia. Roy Rogers was his
hero and his horse, Chief, was
a special friend. Most of all
he loved and spent most of his
time with his wife, Rosslyn.
Survivors include his wife of
41 years, Rosslyn (McBride) Harris
of Hudson, son and daughter-in-law,
Clay and Stephanie Harris of Hudson;
daughter and son-in-law, Kristi
and Scotty Wilkins of Onalaska;
grandchildren, Brittany, Hunter,
Cade and Adyson Harris, Savanah
and Ben Wilkins; sisters and brothers-in-law,

Barton departed this

battle with cancer. Janet was
a loving mother and wife who fought
a courageous battle till the end.

Teacher and a member of the Choir.

Winston
S. Smith, (Lt Col USAF
Retired) 88, died Sunday, December
9, 2007. Visitation will be at
Watson & Sons Funeral Home
from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday,
December 11, 2007. Funeral services
will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday,
December 12, 2007 at Watson &
Sons Funeral Home with Bro. Pete
Williams officiating. Interment
will follow at Newbern Cemetery.
Winston
was a native of Shelby County,
born October 10, 1919 to Nina
Stillwell Smith and Samford Smith
on the family farm located in
the Newbern community. He graduated
from Center High school in the
class of 1936, and attended Texas
A & M during the 1937/1938
term. Since Winston was attracted
to military life, he enlisted
in November 1939, and his military
career lasted thirty years. After
a short stint in the Infantry,
he transferred to the Army Air
Corps and was stationed at Barksdale
Army Air Field. During mid 1941
he was selected to attend an aircraft
maintenance school at New Orleans,
Louisiana. While there he met
his sweetheart who became his
wife, lover and partner for 66
years. He was commissioned a Second
Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps
on November 10, 1944. Winston
served a tour of duty in Japan
during 1945/1946. His next overseas
assignment was to Germany during
the Berlin Airlift. During 1956
while stationed at Kelly Air Force
base at San Antonio, Winston was
selected to attend the University
of Texas, and received a BBA degree
majoring in Industrial Management.
Assignments included Chief of
the Atlanta Air Procurement District,
Atlanta, George, Department of
Defense procurement instructor,
Fort Lee, Virginia, and Base Procurement
Officer Elmendorf AFB, Alaska.
Following
retirement Col Smith returned
to Shelby County and was selected
to be the first probation officer
in Shelby County. In this assignment
he recognized the need for a rehabilitation
facility, and was responsible
for organizing and managing a
halfway house for alcoholics.
He was an ardent participant in
Southern Gospel music and sang
with several local quartets. He
was a member of the First United
Methodist Church, as he joined
in his early teens. While in the
military he participated in Base
Chapel activities and upon his
return to Shelby County renewed
his participation with the First
United Methodist Church.
Winston
was loyal to his family, his country
and his friends. His joy for living
was an inspiration.

Arlan
Hays
was born on July 14, 1914, to
Webster F. Hays and Alice Elizabeth
(Hall) Hays. He entered into rest
on December 6, 2007, in Lufkin,
Texas. He attained the age of
93 years, 4 months and 22 days.
He began working at the Tribune
at age 12. He graduated from SAHS
in 1932 and in 1933 he was named
as Publisher, a title that he
kept until 1997 when he shared
the title with his son, Stephen,
as Co-Publishers. He remained
active in the business until his
death.
Some
of his many accomplishments in
life include First Baptist Church
– Member since May 1, 1957,
and usher for many years. Chamber
of Commerce – One of original
directors in 1953; in 1984 received
Newspaper Man of the Year, 1993
was Business Man of the Year,
1996 received President Award.
2001 received Lifetime Achievement
Award; Honorary Director for about
10 years. Lions – Was an
organizing member of San Augustine
Lions Club in 1937; served as
Secretary-Treasurer of club for
15 plus years, remained member
for 70 years. Member of the Sons
of the Republic of Texas, Honorary
Deputy Sheriff, named as Honorary
Admiral in Texas Navy, recognized
for his outstanding commitment
for his “Service To Others”
by Commissioners and County Judge
Curt Goetz, in 1997. Arlan’s
birthday, July 14th, was proclaimed
as “Arlan Hays Day”
in San Augustine County, received
Community Builder Award from the
Grand Lodge of Texas and Redland
Lodge #3, SAISD Outstanding Booster
Club Service, Lincoln Alumni Award
1995, Distinguished Service Award
from American Cancer Society,
support of the SA Police Department,
honored for supporting the Broaddus
ISD, FHA Honored Citizens Outstanding
Support, honored by the Texas
Nursing Home Association, recognized
for his support of the SA Boys
and Girls Club, Voice of Democracy
Award from VFW Post 9313, Friend
of 4-H award in 1970 and 1985-86,
Award of Appreciation from the
Sons of Republic of Texas, Friend
of Public Library Award, and Certificates
of Appreciation Awards from the
following, DRT, Department of
Aging, Girl Scouts, FFA and Texas
Dept. of Human Resources. There
were many other local awards and
recognition.
He is survived by his son, Stephen
Hays and wife Kelly of San Augustine;
grand-daughter Leslie Hinton and
husband Jason of Longview; Great-granddaughter,
Harley Lynn Hinton of Longview.
