Addie B. Hughes, 92, of Center, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Pine Grove Nursing Home. She was born August 31, 1915 in Center to William Newton Ford and Amanda Humphries Ford. Ms. Hughes was a long-time member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, February 29, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Rev. Don Moore and Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Mary Whiteside Frizzell Berry, 77, of Deweyville, passed away Monday, February 25, 2008 in Beaumont. Funeral services will be at 2 PM, Thursday, February 28, 2008 in the Chapel of Dorman Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Brother John Fortenberry, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Deweyville. Interment will follow in Deweyville Cemetery in Deweyville. Visitation will be from 5 PM until 9 PM. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Born on February 7, 1931 in Shelby County, Texas to Joseph Smith and Lona (McKenzie) Whiteside, she was a longtime resident of the Deweyville area, she owned and operated Mary's Beauty Shop in Deweyville for over 50 years. She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Deweyville where she enjoyed her Sunday school class. Mrs. Berry became resident at the Optimist Village in Orange where she grew attached to many fellow residents and was also involved with the resident's council there. Mrs. Berry loved people, never met a stranger and she enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Berry is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Grady Berry, her sisters, Melinda Waller and Virginia Samford, her brothers, James Whiteside and Tommy Chambless and her very special nephews. Those who will most cherish her memory are her daughters, Cheryl Graham and husband Kenneth of Orange and Denice Dupuis of Deweyville, sisters, Elle Noble and husband Reverend Dee Noble of Anacuco, brother Bacie Whiteside and wife Dixie of Center, Texas, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

85, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at a Bossier City nursing home. She was born July 17, 1922 in Joaquin to August Coyle and Edith Corine Roe Coyle.

Bill England of Huxley,Tx. passed away Saturday, February 23, 2008 in Shreveport,La. His memorial service will be at 2:00 this Wednesday at Toledo Bend Baptist Church.

Billy Tom Strong, age 79 of Center, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Pine Grove Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with his Grandson, Rev. Travis Lee and Bro. Edward McRae officiating. Burial will follow at White Rock Cemetery in Center.

Visitation will be Monday evening from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born June 14, 1928 in Shelby County, Texas to parents, Virgil & Fleta (Fleming) Strong. He was of the Baptist faith. He retired from Center Plywood where he worked for many years. He is preceded in death by his parents, and 2 Sisters, Mildred Wooten and Mozelle Requardt, 1Grandson, Billy Steven Strong and 1 Great Grandson, Michael Ryan Strong.

Milton Lawrence, age 80 of Center passed away Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Shelby Regional Medical Center Hospital.

He was born April 29, 1927 in Harrison County, Texas to parents, J.R. & Erma (Riley) Lawrence. He worked as a lineman for an electric company for many years. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehova’s Witness in Center.

Margaret Ann Scott. Funeral services for Margaret Ann Scott, age 70, of Timpson, Texas will be 2 PM, Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson. Officiating will be Bro. Elmer Mathews with interment in Blair Cemetery, Timpson. Mrs. Scott passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008, in Timpson.

Born October 29, 1937 in Timpson, she was the daughter of Buford and Louise (Herndon) Frederick and married to Robert Joe Scott on May 20, 1953. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, Timpson, and loved being a homemaker as she cared for her husband, children and grandchildren.

J. Lloyd Woods. Funeral services for Mr. J. Lloyd Woods, age 91 of Tenaha, Texas, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Tenaha with Brother Jay Orr, Brother Russ Atwood, and Brother James R. Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Cemetery near Tenaha under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Mr. Woods passed away on Sunday morning, February 17, 2008 in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Java Lloyd Woods was born on October 2, 1916 in the Brooks Community of Panola County, Texas to Thomas Monnie and Edna Bessie Brown Woods. Mr. Woods graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1934 and later earned his bachelor’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. He married Anna Mildred Baldwin on February 27, 1942 in Tenaha. In his early years, Mr. Woods worked as a teacher, coach, and principal. He also worked as a superintendent in the Elysian Fields and Hemphill School Districts. He owned operated a feed store in Tenaha for many years. Mr. Woods worked the majority of his career as a real estate broker in the East Texas area for over 50 years. He had lived most of his life in Tenaha. Mr. Woods was a faithful member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Tenaha where he also taught Sunday school. Mr. Woods was presented with a humanitarian honorary doctorate degree from East Texas Baptist University where he served as a lifetime trustee. He also served on the Administrative Board of the Texas Baptist Foundation. Mr. Woods was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son in 1942; an infant daughter in 1945; and his
wife, Mildred Baldwin Woods who passed away on May 7, 2007.
Mr. Woods is survived by a special great-great nephew, Michael B. Vana of Carthage; one brother, John Tom Woods and wife Mary of Pasadena; three sisters, Monnie Bess Woods Jones of Tyler, Nell Woods Hancock of Longview, and Patsy Ruth Woods Byerley and husband Paul of Beaumont; two sisters-in-law, Rita Woods of Carthage and Dorothy Woods of Belton; and special friends, John and Erma Scull of Tenaha. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and a host of friends also survive Mr. Woods.
Serving as pallbearers are Drue Scull, Terry Scull, Greg Starr, Jim Edwards, David Edwards, and Bill Edwards. Serving as honorary pallbearers are the Deacons of First Baptist Church of Tenaha, the Trustees and Administrators of East Texas Baptist University, W.A. Parker, and Tom Crawford.

Nola Jean Rhodes. Funeral services for Nola Jean Rhodes, age 67, of Timpson, Texas, will be at 2 PM, Monday, February 18, 2008, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Timpson. Officiating will be Bro. Cliff Hughes with interment in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Mrs. Rhodes passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008 in Timpson.

Born on July 02, 1940 in Patroon, Shelby County, Texas, she was the daughter of Alfred E. and Virginia Othella (Goodson) Stephens. She and Darrell D. Rhodes were married June 30, 1956 and were blessed with 51 years 7 months and 16 days of life together. She was a gradate of Panola College of Nursing.

Jean Rhodes was a virtuous woman who loved her God, family and church. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and served in many areas, including teaching Sunday School, loving the babies in the nursery, helping with Vacation Bible School and purchasing supplies for the church. She believed her primary calling was as a deacon's wife and that God expected her to serve as an example for younger deacon's wives.

Jean was serving as Associate Conductress of Timpson Chapter 1144 Order of the Easter Star. She and Darrell were influential in reactivating the Timpson Chapter.

Survivors include husband Darrell D. Rhodes of Timpson, sons Steven Rhodes and wife Rhonda of Palmer, Alaska, and Rickey Rhodes and wife Jewel of Center, Texas, daughter De'Andrea Mucka of Channelview, Texas, brothers Vatton Lavone Stephens of Rusk, Texas and Luther Ray Stephens of Odessa, Texas, sisters Dorthy Bailey of Timpson, Frances Hoover of Timpson and Murlin Poskey of Nacogdoches, Texas, 6 grandchildren: Ashley and Kyle Rhodes, Joseph and Aaron Mucka, Thomas Darrell and Rickey Lynn Rhodes. 1 great granddaughter; Michelle Rhodes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kittie Lois Leathers, 98, of Tenaha, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008 at a local nursing home. She was born July 28, 1909 in Monday, Texas to Sidney James Milam and Ethel Corzine Milam. Ms. Leathers was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Tenaha.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Monday, February 18 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Ray A. Dickerson, Jr., 70, of the Fellowship Community, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2008 at his home. He was born December 24, 1937 in Shelby County to Ray Armon Dickerson, Sr. and Era Dell Glaze Dickerson. Mr. Dickerson had been a member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church for many years, and had served as a deacon since 1967. He served in the US Army from 1961 to 1963.

Charles Ray Haley, 56, of Center passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at his residence. He was born February 22, 1951, in Beaumont, Texas, to Charles Haley II and Thelma Williams.

Mr. Haley was a rancher and affiliated with Folsom Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Patterson was born October 24, 1918 in the Arcadia Community to Floyd Patterson and Venia Haliburton Patterson. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Mr. Patterson was employed with the Postal Service and was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Shelby County Sheriff's Posse and loved Rodeos and riding horses.

Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm Monday, February 11, 2008 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at Watson and Sons Chapel with Bro. Gordon Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow at Powdrill Cemetery in Shelby County.

Neil Edge, 85, of Old Center Community, passed away Friday, February 8, 2008 in Shreveport, La., Ms. Edge was born June `15, 1922 in the Old Center Community to Elzie Graves and Ruby McCullough Graves. She chose nursing as her vocation and retired from Panola General Hospital in 1982. Ms Edge was a member of the Old Center Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of the Old Center Community.

Visitation will be held from 4 PM to 6 PM, Sunday February 10, 2008 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, February 11, 2008 at Old Center Baptist Church in Panola County with Bro. Rodney Puryear officiating. Imri was born in Logansport, LA on August 25, 1933 to Charlie and Mary Matthews. He passed away suddenly on February 6, 2008 in Logansport, LA. Imri was retired from the DeSoto Parish Police Jury as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Freedom Missionary Baptist Church.

Preceding Imri in death is his wife Barbara Matthews and grandson Adam Matthews and Noah Matthews.

Left behind to cherish his memories are his sons Mark Matthews and wife Kathy, Dennis Matthews and wife Karen and Jody Matthews and wife Wanda; daughter Christy Atwood and husband Eddie; sisters Hazel, Virginia, Exa Mae and Jan; brothers Bobby, Darrel and Pat; brother-in-law Bill Creighton; grandchildren Stephanie Snell, Colton Pearson, Hannah, Nickolas and Morgan Matthews, Emily Ann Atwood, Taylor and Parker Atwood; and great grandchildren Bailey, Avery, and Cain Snell.

Betty Sue Johnson, age 71, of San Augustine, passed away February 8, 2008 in Nacogdoches. She was born June 10, 1936 in Center, Texas to D.C. Carrell and Jessie Brittain. Services will be held at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine on February 11, 2008 at 10 AM with Bro. Jack Forbis officiating. Visitation will be Sunday 5-8 PM. Interment will be at Liberty Hill Memorial Gardens in San Augustine.

She was a homemaker and was a memeber of the Toledo Bend Baptist Church.

Betty Lou Bridges Hughes, 76, of Nederland passed away at her residence on Thursday, February 7, 2008.

Betty was born January 3, 1932 in Campti, Texas in Shelby County to Elza and Jimmie Potts Bridges. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and has been a resident of the Mid County area for 47 years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Alton Hughes, son, Marvin Scott Hughes, daughter, Rebecca Lou Hughes, granddaughter, Jennifer Nichole Hughes, and also her mother, father and three brothers.

Survivors include her sons, Michael Alton Hughes and wife Peggy of Plano, David Lee Hughes and wife Karen, Mark Stephen Hughes, Christopher Alan Hughes and wife Josette all of Nederland, grandchildren, Michael Scott Hughes and wife, Tonja, David Lynn Hughes, and wife, Carrie, Matthew Wade Hughes, Jaime E. Glenn W. Ansley, 66, of Gary, previously of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008 in Tyler. He was born November 12, 1941 in Choice, Texas, Shelby County to Bertis Edward Ansley and Lillie Mae Collins Ansley. He was a former member of Doverside Baptist Church in Houston, and served in the US Army from 1959 until 1965. Glenn enjoyed coaching Little League baseball and football for many years. For eighteen years, he was a pipefitter for Brown and Root of Houston. After leaving the city, Glenn came to Shelbyville and started Ansley’s Disposal Service, which he owned and operated for twenty years. Upon his retirement in 2002, he sold his business to a good friend, Johnny Fleming. While Glenn’s wife, Alice, continued working at Ansley’s Disposal, he had more time to do the things he loved, which included spending precious time with his grandchildren and cooking candy and desserts for family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, February 8, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the McClelland Community Church in Shelbyville with the Rev. Charles R. Dooley and Bro. Chris Collins officiating. Jesse Thomas "Top" Boles Jr., 77, of Orange passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at Harbor Hospital in Orange.

Funeral service will be 2 pm, Thursday, February 7, 2008, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange.

Graveside service and interment will be 11 am, Friday, at Strong Cemetery in Center, Texas. Officiating will be Rev. Mary Howland.

Top was born September 9, 1930, in Shelbyville, Texas, to Jesse T. Sr, and Maggie Baker Boles.

He retired from Firestone as an operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse T., Sr. and Maggie Boles, his companion of 29 years, Natalie Smith, brothers, Alvis Doyle and Thomas Lee Boles, sister, Zelda Peveto and infant sister, Caroline.

He is survived by his children, Greg Boles, Gary Boles, and Gwen Stark all of Linden, Texas, eight grandchildren and sister Melba Kelley of Orange.

Florene Fleming Garrett, 89, of Amarillo, previously of Shelby County, passed away Friday, February 1, 2008 at an Amarillo hospital. She was born February 5, 1918 in San Augustine to Elmer Samford and Carrie Ola Martin Samford. Ms Garrett cared so deeply for her family, her friends, and her community. She was a member of th First Methodist Church of Center for years, where she was an active member in the Chancei Choir, president of her Sunday school class and held many other offices with the church through the years. She was also a proud member of the Beta Sigma Phi.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Sunday, February 3, 2008 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center.
