Rider Band has busy weekend, rated “Superior” at NAMMB - November 8, 2011

On Friday, November 4th the Rider band recognized its Senior Class for all their dedication and hard work. Senior band students were presented roses provided by the band booster club, and were introduced at pre-game with their parents. While the Rider band was thanking their Senior students for their hard work and dedication, they also looked to the future. The 8th grade band had the opportunity to enter the stadium with the HS band, and play in the bleachers with them during the game. This year approximately 205 band students participated in the annual 8th Grade/HS Band night.
At halftime the Roughrider band showcased it’s drill that earned them straight one’s at UIL Marching Contest, and then recognized this year’s band beau and band sweetheart. Beau and Sweetheart honors are given based on a vote by the band students. This year’s band beau is Faustino Angel, and this year’s band sweetheart is Kristen Gilchrist. During the fourth quarter all 24 MS and HS twirlers performed to “Aztec Gold” performed by the 8th grade and HS bands.
On Saturday, the HS band traveled to Stephen F. Austin State University to participate in the National Association of Military Marching Bands Competition. This year’s judges for the contest were Ronnie Ferguson, Stuart Byrd, Lee South, Barry Johnson, and Jonathan Kelly. Each judge scores the band 0-100 points. To receive a rating of ‘superior’ at this contest, bands must earn at least a 93. Most bands who attend this contest have already achieved a first division rating at UIL, so standards at this contest are like those at a state marching contest. In addition to being rated, bands are also scored against one another. This year, the Rider band received fourth place and earned the Bobby Goff Superior Performance Award. Of the 17 bands at this contest, only 7 earned superior performance awards: Center, Lindale, Spring Hill, Carthage, Cleveland, Vidor, and Atascosita.
Congratulations to these students on all their success this year, we are very proud of you.
