Center FFA Travels to SFA Farm - October 23, 2009
Submitted by Shana Brittain

A lot of folks have been asking about the FFA trip to the SFA farm - it was great! The kids learned more in two hour than I can teach in 2 weeks in the classroom. Hands on in the field really is great!

They got some hands on experience with farm animals. There was a new litter of pigs born and the kids got to notch ears, give IPD shots, clip needle teeth and umbilical cords. They also toured the swine center and saw lots of different breeds and ages of swine. They then went to the Beef Center where they had the opportunity to palpate heifers. Then, Rosie, the cannulated cow was brought up and her cannula was opened and the students were able to look and feel inside her rumen. It was a very educational trip and a good time was had by all!

Center FFA members Colton Allen, Seth Brittain, Colton Hairgrove, Britney Fairchild, Jessica Berry, Annie Reeder, Klaryssa Guitteriez, Emily Glass and Ashlyn Robertson, with Rosie the Cow and Erin Brown Phd ( Animal Science SFA). FFA Advisors Shana Brittain and Marshall Miles.

Last Saturday, October 17, 2009 the Roughrider band traveled to Stephen F. Austin State University to compete at the UIL Region XXI Marching Contest. The Rider band received a “superior” rating from all three judges- the highest distinction a band can receive at marching contest. The band has received this distinction for six consecutive years.

The adjudicators for this contest were Mr. Richard Loveless from New Boston High School, Mrs. Diane Baker from the Beaumont area, and Mr. Nelson Noland, also from the Beaumont area.

Mr. Richard Loveless said, “Nice Fanfare”, “Nice lines”.

Mrs. Diane Baker said “Super well rehearsed band- beautiful ensemble sounds…. Styling, articulation, balance, blending- band YOU JUST DID WELL!!!”

Mr. Nelson Noland said “Great ensemble sound, very musical, great drill design and execution… awesome performance, exemplary learning going on!”

The band would like to thank Mr. James Hockenberry, Mr. Heath Hagler, the school board, faculty and staff at Center High School, and the Band Booster club for their support of this program. We would also like to thank those who stuck around after the homecoming game Friday night to support the band in their last performance before this contest.

The band is under the field direction of Junior drum majors Jorge Figueroa, and Tiffany Ruizo.

Congratulations to the Roughrider band on an outstanding performance, we are VERY PROUD of you!!!
