San Augustine Rodeo Princess to Win 4-Wheeler - February 23, 2010
Submitted by J.T. Burnett

“Miss Rodeo Princess” is an added feature to this year’s PRCA Rodeo in San Augustine, May 14-15th. Girls ages 8 and under are invited to participate in the contest. According to rodeo committee President J.T. Burnett, feedback from the community sparked the idea. “We’ve had requests for something like this for little girls to participate in,” said Burnett. “People have asked for something other than an ordinary queen’s contest, so we are hoping the kids will have fun with this.”

Entry forms and rules available by contacting J.T. Burnett at 936-275-2227. Pictured is Joanie Williams of the rodeo committee accepting the donated 4-wheeler from Judge Williams.

The little girl crowned “Miss Rodeo Princess” will receive the grand prize of a purple camouflage 125cc 4-wheeler, donated by San Augustine County Judge Randy Williams, along with other gifts. All participants will be awarded prizes. “We are excited to give great prizes to participants and runners-up such as a bicycle, gift cards, gift sets, and much more,” stated Burnett.

Registration is free, and the rules state the girls must be 8-years or younger on May 13, 2010, which is rodeo week. Girls of all areas are welcome, not limited to San Augustine County residents. No horsemanship or rodeo background necessary. The contest will not be judged on any particular element, only money raised and rules followed.

Girls must earn money by selling raffle tickets, t-shirts, and/or program ads, along with any personal fundraisers they might choose. The contestant earning the most money will be crowned “Miss Rodeo Princess 2010” and will represent the San Augustine County PRCA Rodeo during rodeo week. According to Burnett, the idea behind contestants earning money goes along with the rodeo committee’s motto. “The rodeo committee’s goal is to keep western heritage alive, to remember the way people made their livings with their hands and their land through hard work,” said Burnett. “Rather than have the girls ‘ask’ for donations, we wanted them to ‘earn’ their money and in doing so ‘earn’ the title of Miss Rodeo Princess.”

Money earned by the contestants will go toward scholarships, charities and individual grants to people in need. “We want to help people of the community who might have experienced a natural disaster such as a house fire and who perhaps are not insured, and this contest will help raise money for that cause,” said Burnett.

Registration is open now, and entry forms can be obtained by contacting J.T. Burnett at 936-275-2227 or through email at waxwagon@yahoo.com.
