How to Make a Grinch Grin - December 3, 2011
Submitted by Debbie Leggett

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a fun Christmas classic by the very famous author, Ted Geisel. The Joaquin Elementary Kindergarten classes have figured out just exactly how to make a Grinch grin. First, the students read the book and then watched the movie. Next, the students created their own Grinch with a unique face. After much discussion, the students thought about ways they could make a Grinch grin and posted those outside the classrooms as well. Some of the ways they thought included taking him to the Dollar Store, buying him a pet, giving him some candy and maybe some popcorn. Then to each child’s delight, they made tissue paper wreath ornaments to display outside their classes and take home for the holidays. This is always such a fun, exciting time for the little ones. And you never know when Mr. Grinch could show up!

It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas at Joaquin Elementary - December 1, 2011
Submitted by Debbie Leggett

Chilly weather, Christmas programs, parades, toy advertisements and all the decorated halls at Joaquin Elementary School surely puts everyone in the Christmas mood. Joaquin High School FCCLA members have an Angel Tree set up as you first walk into the school. Next, one is welcomed with Silver Bells in the City and are then reminded of the real gifts we have such as faith, family, health and love represented by gifts under a ten foot tree made with traced hands from every kindergarten through fifth grade student. There are children in grades two thru five preparing for a district wide UIL Academic Meet to be held at our school next Tuesday and Thursday. To be sure, Christmas stories are being read and discussed, Christmas carols are being sung and lots of excitement fills the classrooms. Without a doubt, the spirit of Christmas is in the air and quite catchy!

Joaquin Elementary School Science Fun - November 21, 2011
Submitted by Debbie Leggett

Wow, let’s talk about fun science projects. It was a day of fun learning experiences for all first grade students at JES on Wednesday, Nov. 16th. First grade teacher, Mrs. Casey Gamble was joined by another noted expert in the field of science, Ms. Eva Loyce Gamble, a former teacher at JHS.

Several parent volunteers were also on hand to help with various stations. Some of those volunteers included Terry Johnson, Ben Brittain, Marie Hunsley and Jamie McBride. We really appreciated their help. Some of the stations of learning were weighing and measuring each pumpkin, sketching the different stages of growth of pumpkins and measuring the circumference. One of the areas of discovery that the students found interesting was that no matter the weight of the pumpkin the pumpkins still floated. They also learned that there is a great color variation as well. Besides learning about the pumpkins, different stations were set up such as testing magnets, seeing how light and water plays tricks on our eyes and also there were boat and car races. It was a great day for all first grade students. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

Submitted Debbie Leggett

Trick or Treat? Well, for the faculty and staff at Joaquin Elementary School it was all treats. Mrs. Sheryl Graves, principal, spent her weekend cooking up goodies to treat the faculty and staff at Joaquin Elementary School. To be sure, it was a treat that everyone greatly enjoyed on this cool, crisp fall day.

JHS Child Development Class Halloween Surprise

Joaquin Elementary Pre-K, K and First Graders were surprised when Mrs. Daniell Smith’s Child Development Class brought over homemade treats. There were cups of candy, batty suckers and other ghostly treats. All the students loved their treats and wish to say thank you to all the high school students who made them! Have a happy and safe Halloween!

Ode to Our Principal - October 19, 2011
Submitted by Debbie Leggett

Ode to our principal
How she does care,

If one of us hollers-
We know she will be there.

She walks, talks and takes care of the bad-
She listens, is compassionate and takes care of the sad.

She goes to the cafeteria and just loves that duty!
‘Cause when she returns … she is one fine beauty.

She took this job with love in heart…
We are all so glad she has become a part.

Today we stand here to make ourselves clear
We’re so glad you are our principal, Mrs. Sheryl…so let’s give her a cheer!

Joaquin FFA Greenhands Attend Area IX Camp - September 30, 2011
Submitted by Shane Vance

On September 28, 2011 the Area IX FFA Association held their annual Greenhand Leadership Camp at Lake Tomahawk located in the pine forest between Livingston and Woodville. A total of 240 Greenhand FFA members representing 44 schools attended the educational event made fun. Each camper attended 10 workshops, which included topics such as time management, finding a niche in FFA, getting involved in FFA, SAEs, networking, stepping out of one’s comfort zone, the importance of being a good leader and follower, official FFA dress, overcoming the fear of public speaking, and influencing others.

Jodi Cockrell, the Area IX President, began the day of leadership with FFA Members: Tanner Williams, Miranda Prnka, Maddison Andres, Colby Hamilton, and Casey Knippers in attendance from the Joaquin FFA Chapter.
Workshops were presented by the Area IX Officers, and the current State Vice President from the Area IX FFA Association, Kelli Nueman from the East Chambers FFA chapter. Each of these officers spent countless hours creating productive, entertaining workshops in order that every Greenhand member in attendance walked away from camp with something new to carry back to their home chapter. After the workshops concluded, everyone enjoyed a lunch provided by Fresh Country Fundraising and then took part in recreation.

It was a great leadership opportunity for the Greenhand’s from the Joaquin Chapter, and got them 'Fired Up' about the FFA.
