Joaquin Elementary SchoolMall Project - January 9, 2012
Submitted by Debbie Leggett
Students are anxiously awaiting the SchoolMall Project sponsored by the Joaquin PTO to begin this coming Monday, Jan.9,2012. Keep your eyes open for a booklet of postcards that your child will be bringing home.
These booklets must be filled out with each booklet having ten addresses per booklet. All booklets must be completed and turned back in on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012. Every student that turns their booklets back in on Tuesday will receive a prize. In addition, students who turn in all booklets with information totally completed will have their names put in a drawing for the remote controlled robot on display by the front office. Our school goal is to get 100 booklets turned in. Each 100 booklets lets Joaquin receive $1,200. Please help and encourage your student to participate in this worthwhile project. On your mark, get set, go!!!

UIL District a Grand Success - December 14, 2011
Submitted by Debbie Leggett
Whitney Hooper, Joaquin Elementary School UIL Direction, gladly and excitedly took on the extra job of organizing and preparing for Joaquin Elementary School to host this year's 2011 UIL Academic competition. The schools that participated were Waskom, Tatum, Jefferson, and Joaquin. The events took place on December 6th and 8th. Each and every event ran very smoothly and promptly. When the students were not tested in their events, they were allowed to participate in some really treats in the cafeteria such as board games of many natures, painting crafts, creating handmade cards, handmade snowflakes and pictionary drawing games. One of the neat things that made this whole event run so smoothly was the help and volunteer hours by our parents and our Jr. High School Beta Club members. Also, SCJCC members participated as volunteers. Our Joaquin PTO was well represented as they sold an array of snacks to all students. There is so much hard work that goes into the training for these events by the students and the coaches that we wish to say a big congratulations to each and every student who participated. Mrs. Sheryl Graves, JES Principal, and Mrs. Whitney Hooper would like to thank each and everyone who helped to make this year's UIL a grand success. As we say at Joaquin Elementary..."Our students Rock!!"
The final results of the contest were:
Joaquin Elementary - 1st place (582 points)
Tatum Elementary - 2nd place (372 points)
Jefferson Elementary - 3rd Place 275 Points)
Waskom Elementary - 4th Place (161 points)

Joaquin Pink Pride Game, A Huge Success - November 4, 2011
Submitted by Danielle Smith

Joaquin High School Pink Pride Game was a huge success. The Art Club, Beta Club, Jr. High Cheerleaders and FCCLA joined forces to conduct Breast Cancer Awareness projects throughout the month of October. Through their combined efforts, the organizations will be donating over $3000 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The football teams, cheerleaders and band showed their support during the October 13th and 14th games against Arp by helping to fill the stadium with pink. A special thanks goes out to all those that contributed to the efforts. JISD is looking forward to this becoming an annual event. |

Joaquin PTO Trunk or Treat - November 2, 2011
Joaquin PTO hosted our 4th Annual Trunk or Treat and Chicken Spaghetti Fundraiser on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 for families, teachers and students of the Joaquin ISD community. Patrons dressed in Halloween attire gathered in the parking lot of the elementary school which was lined with trunks of treats and prizes. Trophies were awarded for trunk decorating for the cutest, spookiest, most creative and best overall. Costume contest winners were awarded medals for 3rd grade and under, 4th grade and up, and a trophy was awarded for best dressed family. Our chicken spaghetti fundraiser was a great success. Joaquin elementary students sold over $2500 in chicken spaghetti plates. PreK, K and 1st grade sold the most plates, with 2nd and 3rd grade only 4 plates behind them. To show our appreciation for the students and teachers efforts, we are awarding the entire elementary with a popcorn party! A very special thank you to all who donated food, candy, prizes and especially their time to
make this community event special and successful. We thank you!

Joaquin Elementary Students Study Asian Art - October 7, 2011
Submitted by Debbie Leggett
Students in grades K through 5 looked into the world of Asian Art. They focused on the geography, the people and cultures of China and Japan. Some even learned a few new words in Chinese and Japanese. Then, they had fun creating puppets, dragons, kites, bento boxes, and straw, toothpick and paper sculptures too. Others made sketches and paintings with an Asian flair. The second through fifth graders wrote Haiku poetry and drew and painted pictures that went along with their Haikus. To be sure it was interesting learning about China and Japan. Everyone did a great job and has hopes of presenting a parade thru the halls of our schools at a later date. Be sure to watch for those pictures!
