Tigers Run into Rematch Weekend at Regional’s - March 6, 2012

Friday Dramatics and a Saturday Slugfest

In what has been called the toughest basketball region in Texas, the Tenaha Tigers wrapped up another amazing season this past weekend at the Regional tournament at Tyler Junior College. In the end, the Tigers run to defend the Region III Championship ended at the hands of the team they defeated a year ago to advance to Austin. Clarksville’s Tigers went on a big 3rd quarter run to erase a Tenaha 36-33 halftime lead in front of an over-filled Wagstaff Gym crowd of over 2500 people. The game featured a match-up of the state’s #1 and #4 ranked teams and for the most part, the action on the floor did not disappoint. At game’s end, Clarksville’s 72-61 victory hinged on an inspired 2nd half defensive performance and a huge advantage at the foul line. The Blue Tigers would end the night 34-42 at the charity stripe while Tenaha’s maroon Tigers would only go 7-12. Six outstanding Tiger careers came to a close in the Regional Final. Tiger Seniors Reginald Davis, Octavious Griffith, Shaquille Mitchell, Demon Horton, LaDarren Cooks, and Jakelvin Cooper depart the Tiger program with 4 Regional Tournament appearances and two trips to the State Tournament in Austin. On the night Reginald Davis led the Tigers with 20 points.

Friday’s Tenaha/Cayuga matchup was one for the Ages….. Tigers win 75-74.

He said he had a dream early in the week that he hit the game winner to beat Cayuga. Well, for Demon Horton and the Tenaha Tigers, sometimes dreams come true. Horton’s right baseline 3-pointer with :03.9 remaining would prove to be the game winner as for the 3rd time in four years, the Tenaha Basketball program would defeat Cayuga in dramatic fashion. The game’s final score and fashion in which the Tigers won the game was a nearly exact replica of last year’s dramatic finish over Cayuga. The 2012 edition, however, was a classic from start to finish. The two powerhouses ranked #3 and #4 would trade early punches in front of a raucous capacity crowd as Cayuga would open the game with a 10-2 run only to be answered by a rousing 8-0 run by the Tigers. Runs like this would continue as each team traded heavyweight punches throughout the game. The outcome looked bleak for Tenaha when the score was tilted to Cayuga by four points with just :39 remaining. A couple of critical plays would ensue as Shaquille Mitchell turned a steal into two points and Reginald Davis would convert three free throws to offset Wildcat free throws. With just :11.8 remaining and a 73-72 lead, Cayuga would make only one of two free throws leaving the door open for the Horton dramatics. As Reginald Davis drove to the right side of the lane, he found Horton alone in the corner for the game winning shot.

The Maroon Army was certainly heard and credited for playing the role of the 6th man….

There was no doubt which school had the most enthusiastic following this past weekend as the Tiger fans came early and made sure that everyone in Tyler knew they were heard from. On behalf of the players, coaches, and administration a big THANK YOU to all fans of the Tiger Program for continuing to show your support for our programs and students. It was definitely a “sound to behold”.
