Timpson ISD Cafeteria News – February 2, 2012
Submitted by Sherri Strahan

Recent news stories, from the Paula Dean diagnosis of diabetes to the high obesity rate in children, have emphasized the need to eat more healthy diets and teach children more about proper nutrition. The federal guidelines for nutrition have become stricter over the past few years for school meal programs which limit the amount of food, sugar and fat that can be served to students. All school cafeterias which receive federal money through the free and reduced meal federal program must follow these mandates. Timpson ISD Director of Food Services Rita Coan said these federal mandates make it more challenging to provide healthy, nutritious meals that students like but that she and her staff are working hard to find foods that students enjoy. This is especially important since most students eat two out of three meals in the cafeteria five days a week. The staff offers a variety of salads, vegetables and fruits. They encourage students to at least try foods that they have not tasted. Kiwi fruit and zucchini are two items students were reluctant to try at first, but now more students are choosing. Students are also getting the opportunity to try new entrees such as chicken parmesan. Mrs. Coan said students were initially reluctant to try it but now it is a popular choice for students. Old favorites are also offered such as chicken rings and french fries but they are prepared by baking rather than frying which makes them a healthier option. Mrs. Coan said a high percentage of students eat cafeteria food each day. By taking the breakfast to the high school, participation has increased to 70% eating breakfast. Yogurt is now a popular breakfast choice that few students tried when it was first offered. The lunch program is also a popular choice with an average of 82% of students participating. Mrs. Coan credits her cafeteria staff for their hard work and dedication to provide healthy, nutritious and delicious meals for the Timpson ISD students.

Timpson ISD on 10th Anniversary of 9-11 Honor Local First Responders - August 29, 2011
Submitted by Sherri Strahan

In honor of the tenth anniversary of 9-11, Timpson ISD will honor our local first responders on September 9 at a 7:00 p.m. pre-game ceremony at the home Varsity football game against Groveton. The school district wants to show its recognition and appreciation to the local volunteer fire department, volunteer ambulance service, city workers and law enforcement who dedicate countless hours to ensuring the safety, health and well being of the community. The district will send invitations with details about the recognition ceremony to local first responders. The district hopes everyone will come out to show their appreciation to those who serve the community.

Also, the September 9 foorball game will be elementary night. Elementary students will be admitted to the football game free if they are accompanied by an adult. A special seating area will be designated for elementary students for the first half so that they can cheer for the Bears. Students who attended mini cheerleader camp this summer will do a cheer with the varsity cheerleaders. Fifth grade boys who played in the football league will get to run out with the varsity football players at the beginning of the game and at the half. District personnel think it is appropriate to combine First Responders Night with elementary night since most of the elementary students were not born when the United States was attacked on 9-11-01. Students will learn not only the important role first responders played on 9-11 but also the vital role they play in the Timpson community. We hope everyone will attend the game and show your support.
