Timpson High School Basketball Report - January 25, 2012
Submitted by Coach Cody Anthony

In our fourth district game of the season, the JV and Varsity Boys hosted the Garrison Bulldogs in the second game of a three game home stand. The Junior Varsity boys were able to control the pace and tempo of the game to come out with a 40-22 victory. We had big 1st and 3rd quarters where we scored 14 and 16 points respectively. The boys were able to get easy baskets in transition by feeding off of our defense. We were able to get numerous steals and then at times be able to clamp down in a half court defense. It was a great effort all the way around and the JV is now at 3-1 in district play. Terrance Garrett led the way with 20 pts, Gavin Pierce 11 pts, Shakur Johnson 4 pts, James Marshall 4 pts, DeKendrick Hooper 1 pt.

The Varsity Boys were able to overcome a late 4th quarter deficit to force overtime and then to get the 46-43 win over Garrison. We came out and played a solid first half, where we had good full court pressure and then were able to attack Garrison’s defense for good shots. In the third quarter we did not have the same intensity and passion as we did earlier in the game. When things were looking their worst, we played our best ball. The boys were able to fight through the struggles and find a way to score big baskets with a minute left in regulation to send it to overtime. I am so proud and excited that the boys found a way to get it done. They showed a lot of heart and will to win; this was a huge victory in the district standings and most importantly for us as a team to put us at 2-2. Lorenzo Young was the leading scorer with 18 pts, Jaylin Rhodes 13 pts, Terrance Brown 6 pts, John Jacobs 5 pts, Deeverick Brinson 2 pts, Dimric Caraway 2 pts.

Right now both teams are playing great and we finish out the week at home on Friday against Beckville. JV Boys will tip off at 5:30, followed by the Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys. We have had a rocking crowd over the past couple of weeks and we need that type of energy and attendance again. With a win on Friday the Varsity Boys will be in 3rd place in the district standings with 5 games to go so it is another pivotal game. Come be loud and support the Bears and Lady Bears. - Coach Anthony

IPads in the Classroom - January 20, 2012
Submitted by Sherri Strahan

Colton Crawford third grader at Timpson Elementary School with his math teacher Ms. Syreeta Johnson

IPads are the latest addition to Timpson ISD's instructional technology equipment. Teachers recognize that students in school today are very familiar with the latest technology advances therefore using them for instruction can be very motivating and effective. Students in grade Pre-K through grade 12 can use the IPad applications to conduct research, practice fractions and phonics as well as many other educational uses.

IPads as Learning Tools

Timpson Middle School Principal Calvin Smith said that students who are reluctant to practice needed math skills such as multiplication using paper and pencil become very motivated to practice these same skills on the IPads. The district purchased a limited number of IPads initially so administrators and principals could determine their effectivemess in helping students master instructional skills. All three campuses are requesting more because of the IPad's popularity and effectiveness with student learning. Timpson Elementary third grade teacher Syreeta Johnson reported that her third grade students using the IPads are learning important math skills that will help them in third grade and that will help them in later grades. Teachers are learning how to use the IPads for both individual and whole class instruction. The TISD Board of Trustees', administrators' and teachers' top priority is academics achievement and therefore are committed to finding the funds to make purchases like the IPad that enhances student achievement.
