Shelbyville’s Tyler West Successfully Defends Powerlifting Championship - March 6, 2013
Submitted by Debbie Gilchrist
There’s a saying in sports that: “It’s harder to repeat as champion, than to win it the first time.” Despite the pressure of high expectations that came with being the two-time defending Regional Powerlifting Champion, Shelbyville High School senior Tyler West, emerged from the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Region 3 Division 3 Powerlifting Meet held at Elkhart High School March 2nd with his third consecutive Regional Championship medal for the 123-lb. weight class. In the process, West broke the Regional record in the bench press competition.
West claimed top honors in the 123-lb weight class with a total weight of 1,000 pounds, winning his class by an impressive 120 pounds over Jacquay Brown of Mildred (880). In the first event, West took a 35 pound lead after the squat competition, lifting 380 pounds. He then established a new Regional record in the bench press with a lift of 245 pounds, out-lifting his closest competitor by 60 pounds. West finished out the competition by deadlifting 375 pounds compared to Brown’s 355 pounds.
Coach Michael Taylor had a record number of Dragon lifters qualify for the Regional Powerlifting Meet. In addition to Tyler West, senior Dillon Brown and junior Colton Brown competed in the 198-lb. weight class, and senior Christian Valencia competed in the 220-lb. weight class. The Dragon lifters finished the Regional Meet in tenth place.
Dillon Brown placed eighth in the 198-lb. weight class with a total weight of 1,185 pounds. Brown squatted 475 pounds, bench pressed 235 pounds and deadlifted 475 pounds. Colton Brown finished in sixth place in the 198-lb. weight class with a total weight of 1,225. He squatted 535 pounds, bench pressed 240 pounds, and had a deadlift of 450 pounds.
Christian Valencia finished in eighth place in the 220-lb. weight class with a total weight of 1,210 pounds. Valencia had a 500 pound deadlift, a bench press of 235 pounds, and a squat of 475. This marked the second consecutive year Valencia qualified for the Regional Meet.
As a result of his win, Tyler West will advance to the T.H.S.P.A. State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene on March 23. West will be aiming to improve on the fifth place medal he won at last year’s State Meet. |

Tiger Hoops Teams Literally “Shoot the Lights Out” in Timpson - February 6, 2013
Submitted by Brenda Farmer
Last night, the Tiger Varsity Basketball teams travelled the short distance to Timpson to take on the Bears and Lady Bears in District 22A Action. For the Lady Tigers, a complete performance highlighted the close of the regular season as they romped to a 60-31 victory. The 60 point performance for the Lady Tigers marks their highest single game point total of the year. Also, the win clinched a tie for 2nd place and a berth in next week’s Bi-District playoff round. Details about the tiebreaker game versus Shelbyville can be found below.
In the boys’ game, the Tigers finally started to look like a contender taking shape. As mentioned in the title, a light bulb in Bear Gymnasium actually did shatter and shower the floor with glass particles. Tenaha fans were sure the onslaught of transition offense and suffocating half court defense by the Tigers in an 87-29 victory was more than the bulb could endure.
Please note the alerts and possible changes to upcoming events below in order to accommodate playoff games for basketball:
Friday, February 8

Aaron Liker Signs with Central Methodist University - February 6, 2013
Composed by J.J. Ford
Coach Kevin Goodwin, Center ISD Athletic Director announced today, February 6th, during the 2013 National Signing Day, Aaron Liker (OL/DL) signed his scholarship agreement to attend Central Methodist University in Missouri. Liker is a 3 time first team All-District and 3 time Academic All-District, and 3 years varsity starter. As a senior, he was named third team All-Region. During his senior year, the Roughriders had a successful football season advancing to the first round of playoffs with a 8-2 record. During the season #50 Liker was selected by MaxPreps as defensive play of the week in Center's winning game against Atlanta (27-14).
Liker said, "I chose CMU because of the small town atmosphere where I wouldn't be just another student on a campus. The campus has a family feel and I really appreciate Coach Ford's motto of faith, family, academics then football. I believe CMU offers a truly student first attitude and I'm really excited to join the team and contribute."

Shelbyville Dragons 8th Grade Football Finish Season Undefeated - November 16, 2012
Submitted by Coach Jim Bradford

The Shelbyville Dragon 8th grade football team has finished the 2012 season with a flawless record of 9-0. The Dragons managed to win in every way imaginable. Some games were high scoring affairs with record stats. Others were low scoring hard hitting defensive struggles. The best however, had to be the last game, when while trailing Alto by 4 with 20 seconds to go in the game the dragons returned an onside kick for a touchdown to rip a win from the jaws of defeat, and secure the perfect season. This is the second year in a row that Shelbyville's 8th grade squad has emerged unbeaten. With this class joining last years unbeaten class in high school next year, it is clear that bright things are on the horizon for the Shelbyville football program. |
