Shelbyville High School Junior Chamber of Commerce Honor Heroes of 9/11 - September 9, 2011
Submitted by Annette Jernigan

SHS JCC member Holly Swearengen, Superintendent Dr. Ray West and Business Manager Joyce Dean

This week the Shelbyville High School Junior Chamber of Commerce honors the heroes of 9/11 by distributing yellow ribbons to SISD faculty, students

SHS JCC members Holly Swearengen and Morgan Jernigan

and individuals in our area. JCC members also placed ribbons on the doors around the SISD campus and on the doors of area businesses. Sunday, September 11, 2011 marks the ten-year anniversary of the worst attack ever on American soil. On September 11, 2001, terrorists flew commercial airliners into the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Another hijacked plane, intended to hit the White House, crashed in a remote area in Pennsylvania after the passengers fought back against the terrorists to prevent the plane from reaching its intended target.

In total 3,497 people died in the attacks on September 11, 2001.
• 2,735 civilians in the World Trade Center
• 87 passengers and crew members aboard American Airlines Flight 11 that hit the North Tower
• 60 passengers and crew aboard United Flight 175 that hit the South Tower
• 343 New York City firefighters and rescue workers and 23 New York City law enforcement officers, 47 Port Authority workers and 37 Port Authority Police Officers, who lost their lives when they rushed in to save the victims in the World Trade Center
• 36 passengers and crew aboard United Flight 93, who gave their lives stopping four hijackers over Pennsylvania
• 64 passengers and crew aboard American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon, killing them and 125 people in the building. The victims were mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters…and all murdered because they were in the wrong place at the right time.

Shelbyville High School JCC members ask that everyone take time during this anniversary weekend to honor these brave people who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We thank you for your support….and….We Remember 9/11.

Thomas Swearengen, SHS JCC members Holly Swearengen and Morgan Jernigan

SHS JCC members Sterling Parker and Holly Swearengen place memorial 9/11 ribbon on the S. W. Carter Elementary front door as elementary principal Amber Swearengen looks on.
